William Boyd was born in Ohio in 1895 and was raised in the Tulsa, OK area. He came to Hollywood in 1918 and became a leading man during the silent era, with his best work done for Cecil B. DeMille. Boyd’s first foray as Hoppy came in 1935, the same year Republic Pictures was formed.

A line from John Ford’s The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance goes, “This is the West, sir. When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.”

There was a moment in time when Bill Boyd ceased being Bill Boyd and simply became Hoppy, the legend–at least for the rest of us. Not a bad way to go.

Our feature for Thursday, January 17 is Three Men From Texas with Hopalong Cassidy (William Boyd), Russell Hayden and Andy Clyde.

We will also view chapters 4 and 5 of the Gene Autry serial, The Phantom Empire and we’ll see Crooked Trail with Johnny Mack Brown to round out the evening.

See you there!

And Roy Rogers is riding tonight
Returning to our silver screens*

That will certainly be true of our November 15 meeting. To honor Roy’s birthday, the Old Cowpoke has chosen “Bells of San Angelo” from Republic Pictures as the feature. William Witney directed this 1947 flick and Dale Evans, Andy Devine and Trigger (of course!) round out the cast.

We will also screen Chapter 3 of “The Phantom Empire” (serial) starring Gene Autry.

The club will run “Raiders of San Joaquin” (Universal, 1943) as the second feature. Lewis Collins directs with Johnny Mack Brown, Tex Ritter, Fuzzy Knight and Jennifer Holt starring in this action-packed oater.

The club welcomes special guests, the Trailblazers, purveyors of fine western music in the “cowboy” way.

Finally, don’t forget our special silent auction. Ray Smith offers a full-sized Durango Kid (Charles Starrett) Movie Poster (in MINT condition) and Nikki Ellerbe offers a unique hand made Collage of Cowboy Stars for silent auction to the highest bidder. All proceeds go to WFPS.

See you there!
