Documentary film maker Dan Gagliasso said of Roy Rogers: “He was always on the side of right and always stuck up for the weak and oppressed. Roy Rogers represented what we hoped America would always stand for.” Roy was not only a movie star, but a radio and TV star in addition to his recording career.

Our first feature is “Sunset in the West” (Republic, 1950) in TrueColor. Starring Roy Rogers, Estelita Rodriguez, Penny Edwards, Gordon Jones and Will Wright. Directed by William Witney. This is a digitally restored print in High Definition. This viewing might even look better than when it premiered on the BIG screen 67 years ago!

The second feature will be “Bordertown Gun Fighters” starring Bill Elliott and Goldsboro’s own Anne Jeffreys. (Republic, 1943) Also starring George Hayes, Ian Keith and Harry Woods. Directed by Howard Bretherton.

And, the Trailblazers will be here to celebrate Roy in song.

B-Westerns, Randolph Scott, Rex Allen, Western Film Preservation Society

It’s time to saddle up and mosey over to the McKimmon Center at NCSU for another BIG western show and we’ve got two great films for you.

Lobby Card for “Silver City Bonanza”

First, our Cowboy of the Year, Rex Allen stars in “Silver City Bonanza” (Republic, 1951) also starring Buddy Ebsen, Mary Ellen Kay and Billy Kimbley. Directed by George Blair. This film co-stars Alix Ebsen as Rex’s sidekick. “Alix” is Buddy Ebsen’s real name and is used in the official billing. “Buddy” was used in all original advertising.

Second, we’ll view one of Randolph Scott‘s best films, The Gunfighters (Columbia, 1947) also starring Barbara Britton, Dorothy Hart and Bruce Cabot. Directed by George Waggner. This movie will be shown in glorious Cinecolor and was filmed in beautiful Sedona Arizona. You will really like this excellent print which has been restored to its original brilliance.

We’ll also take in Chapter 13 of the Serial: “The Valley of Vanishing Men” (Columbia, 1942) Starring Bill Elliott, Slim Summerville, Carmen Morales and Kenneth MacDonald. Directed by Spencer G. Bennet. Don’t miss “Danger on Domed Rock!”

See you there.
