B-Westerns, cowboy movies, Phantom Empire, Republic Pictures

Our first feature for the March meeting stars Allan “Rocky” Lane. In later years, after a full career as a star in B-Westerns, he was able to make a living by lending his voice to the most famous talking horse on TV, “Mr. Ed.”

Republic Pictures released “Oklahoma Badlands” in 1948. The film stars Lane, Eddy Waller, Mildred Coles and Roy Barcroft. Another interesting factoid about this movie: Yakima Canutt directed it.

Get ready to continue your visit to the city below the earth as we view chapters 8 and 9 of the Mascot serial, “The Phantom Empire” starring Gene Autry.

We’ll finish the evening with “Border Law,” released by Columbia in 1931 and starring Buck Jones, Lupita Tovar, James Mason, Frank Rice and Don Chapman. “Border Law” was directed by Louis King.

During a series of recent classes about the history of B-Western Movies, the Old Cowpoke (Nikki Ellerbe) and John “Latigo” Cudd told a group of enthusiastic western movie fans about the golden days of Republic Pictures, the greatest of the B-Westerns production companies.

In its heyday, Republic established the careers of the greatest Cowboy Stars in the business including John Wayne, Gene Autry and Roy Rogers. Additionally, the creative supporting artists at Republic Pictures developed many of the action film techniques, stunts and visual effects we expect to see in movies today. The B-Westerns made possible the financing of other projects including the Orson Welles production of “Macbeth” in 1948 and the Oscar-nominated film “The Sands of Iwo Jima” in 1949.
